29 Plans Available in Your County — Here's How We Sort Through Them
There are 29 Medicare Advantage plans available in this area for 2026. Some have $0 premiums. Some have networks that don't include your doctor. Some look identical on paper and perform very differently in practice. Our job is to know the difference — and to make sure you're in the right plan before you sign anything.
Medicare Advantage, also called Medicare Part C, replaces Original Medicare (Parts A and B) and bundles your hospital, medical, and usually prescription drug coverage into a single plan offered through a private insurer. Most plans also include dental, vision, and hearing benefits that Original Medicare doesn't cover. What they don't all include is your doctor, your specialist, or the hospital you've been going to for years.
That's the conversation we have with every client before we recommend a plan.
Original Medicare covers a wide range of services, but it doesn't cap your out-of-pocket costs, and it doesn't cover most dental, vision, or hearing needs. Medicare Advantage plans address both of those gaps — and in many cases, they do it with low or no monthly premium.
The tradeoff is network. Medicare Advantage plans operate within defined provider networks, and those networks vary significantly by plan and by county. In rural Missouri, that distinction matters more than it does in a city. Not every plan that's available in Douglas or Wright County includes the providers and facilities that Ozarks-area residents actually use.
Here's what Medicare Advantage typically includes:
- Hospital and medical coverage (replacing Medicare Parts A and B)
- Prescription drug coverage in most plans (replacing Part D)
- Dental, vision, and hearing benefits
- Fitness and wellness programs in many plans
- A defined annual out-of-pocket maximum that Original Medicare doesn't provide
What Makes Medicare Advantage Different from Original Medicare

PPO vs. HMO — Which Plan Type Makes Sense in Rural Missouri
The most common Medicare Advantage plan types are HMOs and PPOs, and the difference between them is significant for anyone living outside a major metro area.
An HMO requires you to use in-network providers for covered care, with limited or no coverage for out-of-network services except in emergencies. A PPO gives you more flexibility — you can see out-of-network providers, though typically at a higher cost. For Medicare beneficiaries in Mountain Grove, Ava, Mansfield, or the surrounding Ozarks communities, a PPO often provides more practical flexibility when a specialist or facility isn't available locally and you need to travel to Springfield, Rolla, or another regional center for care.
We walk through this distinction with every client. The right plan type depends on your specific providers, how often you travel, and whether your care routinely takes you outside the immediate area. There's no universal answer — which is exactly why a local agent doing this work on your behalf matters.
We Check Your Doctors Before We Recommend Anything
Network verification is the step that comparison websites can't do for you. A national tool can tell you which plans are available in your zip code. It cannot call a provider's office, cross-reference a plan's directory, and confirm that your primary care physician is actually accepting patients under that plan in the current year.
That's what we do. Before recommending any Medicare Advantage plan, we verify that your current providers — your family doctor, your specialists, your preferred hospital or clinic — are in-network for the plans we're considering. If a plan looks good on premium but doesn't include your doctor, we move on.
We also review your current prescriptions against each plan's formulary. A plan with a $0 premium can cost you significantly more out of pocket if your medications are on a higher tier or not covered at all. Premium is one number. Total cost — including drugs, copays, and network access — is the number that actually matters.
What Happens When Your Situation Changes
Choosing a Medicare Advantage plan isn't a one-time decision. Plans change their premiums, benefits, formularies, and networks each year. Your health needs change too. A plan that was the right fit at 65 may not be the right fit at 72.
The Annual Election Period runs from October 15 through December 7 each year. That's the window when most Medicare beneficiaries can switch plans, drop Medicare Advantage and return to Original Medicare, or make other coverage changes. We contact our clients before that window opens — not after. You shouldn't have to track enrollment deadlines yourself.
Qualifying life events can also trigger a Special Enrollment Period outside of AEP. Losing employer coverage, moving to a new county, or losing access to your current plan are among the events that may allow you to make a change mid-year. We monitor these situations for our clients and let you know when a window applies to you.
